ABOUT / ZEPHAN CHAN

AI impact is
a workplace question.

Zephan Chan works at the intersection of AI adoption, human factors, ergonomics, occupational hygiene and workplace safety — with a particular focus on what AI changes for people doing real work.

Building a practical discipline around AI impact assessment at work.

Zephan is an occupational hygiene and ergonomics practitioner with experience across workplace health, safety, risk management, training and human-centred systems. His work is increasingly focused on a new question for organisations: when AI enters a workplace, how should we assess its effect on human performance, worker wellbeing, work design and operational risk?

42005.ai is part of that work. It is intended to turn AI impact assessment into something operational: a structured way to examine how AI changes tasks, decisions, workload, attention, autonomy, exposure, competence, accountability and the ability of people to remain meaningfully in control.

THE POSITION

The next generation of workplace risk assessment must consider not only physical exposure, but also the effects of algorithms on attention, judgement, autonomy, pace and the design of work.

Zephan's aim is to help lead the practical conversation on workplace AI impact assessment by bringing together disciplines that are too often separated: AI governance, occupational hygiene, ergonomics, human factors, WSH, system design and worker consultation.

01 / WORK FIRSTStart from the task.

Understand what changes in the work before assessing the algorithm in isolation.

02 / HUMAN PERFORMANCEDesign for real people.

Fatigue, distraction, experience, time pressure and cognitive limits are design conditions, not edge cases.

03 / FIELD REALITYObserve actual use.

Technical assurance is not enough. The operational system needs to be understood in context.

04 / IMPACTPotential + risk + impact.

Good AI governance should consider opportunity and harm together, with people and work at the centre.

Two connected practices.

Aware Lab focuses on practical AI capability and responsible adoption. IEH brings established expertise in ergonomics, human factors, occupational hygiene and workplace health. 42005.ai sits at the intersection.
